Formula Explained

The core formula is:

Net carbs = total carbohydrates − dietary fiber − (sugar alcohol × type factor)

Dietary fiber is subtracted because it is not digested and does not raise blood glucose the way starch and sugar do. Sugar alcohols behave differently: some are absorbed and metabolized, so treating them all as zero can overestimate the true net-carb savings. The factors below are reasonable planning estimates based on typical glycemic response and energy values.

Low-carb chocolate: label shows 22 g total carbs, 6 g fiber, 10 g maltitol, serving size 28 g, and you ate 1 serving.

Adjusted sugar alcohol = 10 × 0.5 = 5 g. Net per serving = 22 − 6 − 5 = 11 g. Net per 100 g = 11 ÷ 28 × 100 ≈ 39.3 g.
